Environmental and quality benefits of sea freight for AstraZeneca

In an annual industry conference in London, AstraZeneca shared insight on how utilising sea freight can support product quality goals. They found that temperature excursions were reduced, transportation was more environmentally sustainable and supply chain costs were lower, when their products were transported by sea.

Recently listed as one of the world’s most sustainable corporations and awarded Silver Class distinction for ex-cellent sustainability performance in the RobecoSAM Sustainability Yearbook 2018, AstraZeneca’s sustainability priorities focus on Access to Healthcare, Environmental Protection and Ethics and Transparency.

As part of their science-based approach environmental protection, AstraZeneca was one of the first companies to utilise TSS’ cloud database to analyse their global temperature sensitive shipments. In addition to ensuring compliance with regulations on visibility for all temperature data, the TSS web application provides business intelligence through tracking route performance and modes of transport.

Between 2014 and 2017, AstraZeneca substantially reduced the number of temperature excursions on shipment routes, sea transport being one important factor. With the help of the TSS cloud, deviations have fallen by 30% in the last few years. Fewer wasted products due to temperature deviations also means fewer replaced ship-ments and more effective use of resources.
